How we can change the world

The key to changing the world is education.

If we can educate people (not just children, but adults too) to become better thinkers then everything else will follow.

Please note that I am not saying that we need people who are more knowledgable, I’m saying that we need people with better thinking skills. With the existence of the internet knowledge can be gained at a click of a button. Thinking skills are less easy to acquire.

With enhanced thinking skills people will be better equipped to see the challenges around them and find solutions to overcome them. Most of the challenges that we face in life are ambiguous, yes we may rely on our knowledge of maths, science or geography to help us overcome them, but the bulk of the work is done using thinking skills to understand what needs to be done. Creating the solution is the easy part.

“The formation of a problem is often more essential than its solution, which may merely be a matter of mathematical or experimental skill”
— Albert Einstein

Unfortunately education systems around the world are too focused on our ability to retain and regurgitate knowledge rather than the development of thinking skills and the application of knowledge. I will discuss this further in my next post (I also promise not to quote Einstein again for a while).
