Breaking out of your comfort zone

I recently came across this article by Richard Branson, “Say yes then learn how to do it later”, and it reminded me of something that one of my mentors once said to me:

“Sometimes you have to bite off more than you can chew, then figure out how to chew like hell later.”

This goes against the age-old adage of “under promise, over deliver”.

It is always a good idea to manage expectations, but the only way to grow as a person, as a business, community, nation or human race is to break out of your comfort zone.

There is no greater motivation to learning how to do something and then doing it than necessity. If you say yes to something, if you bite off more than you can chew, then you will find a way to get it done. Humans, by our very nature, are pretty resourceful creatures but most of us will never realise this because we like to stick with what we know.

If you want to grow, develop, learn then you have to break out of your comfort zone, you have bite off more than you can chew and to trust in your ability to chew like hell later.

Happy chewing.
